The impact of the cartographic method on students' map skills level

The presented diploma thesis focuses on the map skills' problematic, which is currently becoming widespread in the Czech research environment. In contrast to the previous empirical studies, this thesis is devoted to the thematic map skills and their level of development among students of grammar schools and geographically oriented branches of university studies. Due to the significant differences between used cartographic methods of visualization on thematic maps the main aim of this diploma thesis is to identify and explain used cartographic method's influence on the level of these important skills. To achieve this aim, it was necessary to focus on different parts of the curriculum (intended, implemented, learned) and to use several scientific methods because this topic hasn't been well established yet and therefore only few theoretical and empirical studies dealt with this specific issue. The issue of Ips typographus in the National park Šumava ?application into geographical education

The issue of Ips typographus in the National park Šumava - application into geographical education Abstract The bachelor thesis deals with the issue of Ips typographus with an emphasis on the possible ways of solving the outbreaks of its population in the National Park of Šumava. This work is also concerned with the application of articles dealing with this problem into geographical education. The outbreaks caused by the Spruce Bark Beetle are a long-term problem typical for non-native spruce monocultures that have replaced, not only in Šumava, the native mixed forests. The opinions on how to approach this matter differ a lot and it is quite hard to assess their objectivity. The method of active reading proved to be ideal when including this topic into geographical education. Active reading of texts in the geographical lessons helps students to develop critical thinking and to shape their individual opinion. The set of articles presented in this thesis encompassing various insights on how to solve the Spruce Bark Beetle outbreaks in Šumava will help the teacher in developing the above mentioned students' skills. Education through the Geography in Curricular Reformation Period of Czech Education System: Reflection of the Changes at Selected Prague's Grammar Schools

The thesis, as the title suggests, focuses on education of Geography and analysis of Geography as a subject at Prague grammar schools. The aim of the thesis is to evaluate the impact of curricular changes on teaching Geography. Furthermore, the thesis is to analyze the ideas of the Geography teachers on teaching methods and content taught to students in their lessons. The work also evaluates the variety of opinions of the pedagogues concerning this topic. It also discusses their different views on a new form of the state leaving exam. Moreover, it looks for the answer whether the new exam might change the methodology of Geography. This work is mainly based on a critical evaluation of expert materials as far as the school reform is concerned. The empirical part itself consists of the survey results and the assessment of directed interviews with 11 respondents, who are the Geography teachers at nine Prague grammar schools.
Analysis of textbooks in terms of interpretation of global issues

In the contemporary world, when the whole world is connected, the fact saying that anything what happens on the other side of the world does not have influence to our lives is not truthful anymore. We live in an era of globalization. Therefore, it is important to focus on the global issues already at school and also on the way in which they concern us. However, it should be borne in the mind that, the most important thing is the way, how teachers explain it to their students. The main aim of this paper is to analyze geographic textbooks for high schools in terms of interpretation of global issues. Semantic units that are related to global issues will be sorted into groups according to the paradigm to which it belongs (national, humanistic and global). Most of semantic units contained in textbooks were included into a global direction, which is characterized by its neutrality. Evaluation of geographical textbooks in terms of environmental ethics

It is clear that the nature needs to be protected. But reasons for this need varies with individuals. Enviromental ethics deals with reasons why the nature should be protected and with attitude to the nature itself. In enviromental ethics there are several lines of thought. Here will be paid attention to theese five - theocentrism, athropocentrism, biocentrism, ecocentrism and lifeboat ethics. The aim of this study is to assess the level of representation of lines of though metioned above in Czech geographical textbooks. Considering that there are many of geographical textbooks, only textbooks designated for different types of high schools of publishers NČCGS, SPN, Fortuna and Fragment are evaluated.

This thesis contains an analysis of the conception of geographical education on ISCED level 3 in Germany. It aims to answer the following basic conceptual questions: Under which conditions is geography being taught? In what manner is geography being taught? What are the expected effects of geographical education on the pupils? During the discussion of conditions, the current status of geography as a teaching subject is presented and the possibilities for cross-curricular collaboration are pointed out. Emphasis is placed on the analysis of form and content, learning objectives/goals and creation of geographical skills. Another part of the thesis is the description of the process and methods used to evaluate the gained geographical knowledge of pupils. The basic method for obtaining relevant data is content analysis of the curricula of the federal states of Germany, resulting in a set of complete record sheets. Forest pedagogy and its value for geographical education

This bachelor thesis deals with the topic of forest pedagogy and possibilities of its use in geographical education. The introductory theoretical part based on the content analysis of domestic and foreign literary sources summarizes the present knowledge of the forest pedagogy in the domestic and world context. It describes this educational direction and its differences from other forest pedagogy-related educational approaches. It introduces the person of the forest pedagogue and the used educational methods. It briefly characterizes the problems of geographic education in our country and tries to find connections between teaching geography and forest pedagogy. The practical part explains how forest pedagogy can contribute to geographic education. It is based on a qualitative research conducted through structured interviews with forest pedagogues. On the basis of the analysis of the obtained data, it explains which geography topics are taught in forest pedagogy programs and how forest pedagogy can be used for geographic education.
Geographical literacy of general public

This thesis focuses on geographical literacy of the general public. It sets two main aims. Firstly to identify geographical community opinion on what knowledge and skills should be these days considered basics of geographical literacy for everyone regardless of their age and achieved education. Secondly to verify the selected basics of geographical literacy with the lay public. The structure of this work follows these aims. The theoretical part concentrates on the explanation of key words and the definition of geographical literacy in accordance with contemporary literature. The other part of the work presents the results of two researches of one's own. The first one was done in the form of an electronic questionnaire and addressed to the members of the geographical community. They firstly used a four-level scale to consider the importance of knowledge and skills that were verified in the research of the geographical literacy of adults in the USA. Secondly, in the form of open-answer questions, they could express their opinion on the core of the monitored assessment reference scope.
